All that is left to finish the front clip swap is to locate and weld on the frame horns and radiator core support from the ’56 Dodge front end so that the fenders, bumpers and hood can be properly reattached to the body. The item to take care of at this step is to retain the stock 1982 sway bar mounting holes while getting everything else to fit properly. Also the GM steering column needs to be located and mounted as well.
Locate and Fabricate Frame Horns and Core Support
Happiness is attaching the front fender to the body and core support and finding out that it fits the way it should! Okay, now on to mounting the steering column so that we can move the old girl around the shop again!
Mounting the Steering Column
As luck would have it, I need to start buying lotto tickets! – The 1982 GM steering column fit perfectly! Even the stock GM column dash mount was in the right place. Since the GM 800 power steering box is mounted in the front steering configuation, we have plent of room for the engine mounts and headers. I sure like the amount of room in the engine compartment and frame that the gen 4-5 ’50s MOPARs have over the flat and fat fendered Fords of the ’30s. Engine and Transmission swaps become soooo easy!
