Windshield Follies!

As usual, the wagon always likes to throw a ringer in on me when I least expect it.  I had taken the wagon to Bell Glass after I picked it up from Lui. Wayne from Bell Glass was somewhat concerned about the way the rubber gasket for the windshield was fitting, but thought that they could get it to work. And they did get it to work for awhile anyway. In addition to the windshield they reset the back window and also the quarter windows since the gasket material that I had for it didn’t fit well either. They also installed the fuzzies and new side windows for me as well. Wayne called me and told me that the wagon was ready to be picked up and so we drove down to Phoenix the next day to pick it up. When we were leaving Payson, I got a call from Wayne telling me that the windshield had cracked on the passenger side while sitting in his shop over night. Sigh… the combination of too large a gasket, the stainless trim and the fact that the original windshield with its edge chips etc was being reused all added up to a large crack.

We picked the wagon up and brought her home so that I could work on the items left on my punch list while we waited for a new windshield. I had tired PPG which is now PGW as a source for the glass since Paul had good luck with them on his Plymouth. Bzzzzzzzzzzt, that was then this is now and PGW dosent seem to want to work with classic cars anymore. Further searching on the internet and I found Metro Parts who had a green tinted windshield for a reasonable price. Their supplier is Pilkington Classics who are  a dealer for LOF. Anyway, glass ordered! I then called Steele Rubber about getting a new rubber gasket that might possibly fit my car better than the one that I had bought from a so called MOPAR specialist. Paul had bought a gasket from Steele for his Plymouth and had the part number for it so I called Steele to order one. The really nice lady that I talked with told me that they now had a gasket that would fit even better than the one that had worked for Paul. We discussed the windshield stainless and I pointed her to this blog and to the photos that I had taken of the stainless prior to sending it out for clean and polish. After looking at the photos she definitely was sure that the new rubber would work better.

Having been there and done that, I ordered both the part number that Paul had used and also the one the she had recommended, with the assurance that I could return the one that Wayne liked the least.

So all is going along great until last Monday when I got a call from Bell Glass. The windshield was in! Yay! but it was for a 1965 Chevy Impala wagon. The warehouse guy inverted to digits in the stock number and pulled/shipped the wrong one. After several phone calls we got everything straightened out. The Chevy glass was picked up last Tuesday and my glass was shipped out on Monday PM. Hopefully, it will be at Bell Glass early this week.

So, I am still doing the Dodge Line Dance Shuffle… two steps forward one step back…

Bettie's 1st Trip!

All of this didn’t stop us from taking the Dodge down to Apache Junction to Don & Glenna’s OTHG Phoenix Pool Party. I am finding that I got the front end about as low as it can go. You have to drive it like you would an off road car, namely nail the throttle when you get in the rough stuff to raise the front end, easy to do in the dirt, but takes some intestinal fortitude to do it in city traffic!
